The chicken was being held in two trailers and a tractor that was stolen from the Food Bank’s facility, at 14 Garfield Way in the Delaware Industrial Park near Newark.
Another tractor was stolen from a nearby business, Chrome Deposit Crop., and apparently was used to pull the second trailer away from the Food Bank, state police said.
Police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmrsh said a review of surveillance video showed someone pulling up to a business adjacent to the Food Bank on Dawson Drive about 9:25 p.m. Saturday in a two-tone, dark Ford pickup truck.
The two tractor-trailers were seen leaving the industrial park about 9:50 p.m.
One load was scheduled for departure today to the City Harvest Food Bank in New York.
The other load was to be used to help Delaware’s relief efforts.
Kim Kostes, the agency’s spokeswoman, said both of the stolen trailers were valued at $20,000, and the tractor is worth nearly $40,000.
They are used by the Food Bank of Delaware to pick up and deliver donated products throughout the region.
Stolen were a 2000 blue Freightliner tractor with Delaware registration CL105987, a 1991 refrigerated utility trailer with Delaware registration T30679, and a 1997 Trailmobile refrigerated trailer with Delaware registration T13114.
The other tractor, a maroon 2001 Freightliner, has "CDC" in white lettering on the doors.
Anyone with information about the stolen trailers should contact police at (302) 633-5000, ext. 0, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333.
