Kilauea readies for monumental blow

Tradewinds yesterday morning blew ash generally to the southwest toward the Kau Desert. The dark area to the right of the ash column rising from the Overlook crater is ash falling from the ash cloud to the ground. The forboding plumes erupt from the Halema'uma'u crater, located within the Kilauea caldera. The forboding plumes erupt from the crater when rocks drop into the lava and explode from the intense heat. (USGS)
